· What is your overall evaluation of this article?
_____Poor ______Fair ______Good ____X___Very Good _____Excellent
· Why did you choose to review this particular article?
I chose this particular article because it is highly relevant to my research topic, which is the evaluation of women’s knowledge of breastfeeding benefits in the area. This article discussed the prevalence of breastfeeding in rural areas, such as rural Appalachia, compared to urban areas.
· How would you rate this article as a tool for teaching a student about cardiopulmonary physiology, radiography, or another allied health specialty?
Students: ____Poor ____Fair _ X__Good _____Very Good _____Excellent
Teachers: ____Poor ____Fair X _Good _____Very Good _____Excellent
Patients: ____Poor ____Fair _____Good _ X__Very Good _____Excellent
· Comment on the readability of this article.
This article was very easy to read and comprehend, therefore the reason for “very good” for patients to learn from. The information in this article was described clearly and effectively in a non-overwhelming or complex manner.
· Course Topics covered:
The article briefly explains some of the benefits of breastfeeding as well as a short description of what the “Healthy People 2020” goals are regarding breastfeeding. It continues on to describe the prevalence of breastfeeding in rural Appalachia, and finally the methods and results of their study.
· Brief Summary:
In short, breastfeeding can be beneficial to both infants and mothers, including nutrition, developmental, psychological, neurological, social, environmental, and immunological benefits. However, mothers in rural areas are less likely to breastfeed. After completing an analysis of the US 2007 National Survey of Children’s Health, it was determined that Appalachia has a significantly lower breastfeeding rate than the national rural level. It was also concluded that there is a need for better awareness programs and interventions that are better adjusted to cultures and risk factors for the rural population. Promoting guidance to pregnant women during doctor visits was also recommended, as well as adding high school educational programs that address the benefits of breastfeeding.
· Identify and attempt to explain three (3) terms, procedures or concepts that were unfamiliar to you when reviewing this article.
(1) First, I have never heard of the term “medical home.” A medical home is a facility that provides primary care and that facilitates partnerships between individual patients and their personal providers. This allows better access to health care and improves health.
(2) Another term I was not familiar with is “otits media.” This is simply a middle ear infection or inflammation. It can be caused by viruses or bacteria that starts as a sore throat, cold or other respiratory problems that then spreads to the middle ear.
(3) Finally, I was unfamiliar with “Weschler scores.” The Weschsler-Bellevue Intelligence Scale was designed to measure intellectual performance by adults. There are three scales now, one for adults, one for children ages 6-16, and one for children age 4-6. The test looks at comprehension, arithmetic, similarities, vocabulary, and performance tests.
· Detail the strengths/weaknesses of this article.
The strengths of this article include having a practical flow as well as appropriate diction and detailed explanations of terms, making it easy to follow and understand. Weaknesses include being too short, in my opinion (which can also be a strength in order to keep the general public hooked on reading it), and could perhaps expand more on the possible solutions and programs that could be introduced to the area to help increase the prevalence of breastfeeding.
· How might this article be useful to you in your further studies and career?
In nutrition, good health and nutrition starts in infants. It is important to me that patients receive the best care and up to date nutrition, so knowing what population needs more education in breastfeeding is a good start to increasing the rates. Breastfeeding has so many benefits and prevents multiple negatives that it is hard to believe that people wouldn’t want to do it after knowing the benefits.
· Does the article include a list of references/citations that can be used to find more information on the topics they cover?
Yes, there are multiple references of recent articles from different health journals on the subject involving obesity, intelligence, overall health, growth, and depression.
